Fruit Sampling Protocol: Apples, Pears

When to Sample: A few days before harvest.

Where: If leaf analyses have already been conducted, sample the fruits from the trees previously identified for these analyses.

How:

  • From "open row" orchards: Select 2 fruits per tree, from two opposite points on the row.
  • From "fruiting hedge" orchards: Select 1 fruit per tree, alternately from each side of the hedge.
  • Harvest at arm's height from trees of the same variety and rootstock, choosing medium-sized fruits and discarding any that are diseased, malformed, damaged, or located inside the tree.

Quantity: 20 fruits in total.

Conditioning: Place the selected fruits in a clean, sturdy plastic bag or net, and then in packaging that prevents damage. Label each batch clearly with: Name, address, variety, rootstock, date of sampling, and plot reference.

Precautions: Ship to the laboratory as soon as possible.
